Nature Reimagined
Hand forged metal sculpture created in suburban Philadelphia and surrounding areas
Meet
the
Artist…
My inspiration comes from nature. I enjoy spending time in our gardens and pond where I observe the details of the local flora, fauna, and flying friends. When I spy inspiration, I often grab my phone and record whatever that is so I can then take that idea into the studio where I begin sketching in my concept book.
Oftentimes, I even sketch the parts of whatever has caught my eye that day. Sometimes I will dismantle a flower to better understand how the components work together to create the whole that we understand as that unique flower. I’ve always been interested in understanding how things work and I’ve taken all kinds of things apart and put them back together. Now, I find myself drawn to understanding how nature works and being able to take that understanding and recreate the natural world in metal as realistically as possible. It allows me to combine my love of nature and metal into my art.
Most of my pieces are three-dimensional works that are often stand-alone pieces. I started with creating individual flowers such as roses and dogwood blossoms. I would study how the blooms were formed and the parts that went into the whole and begin recreating this in metal. I began adding nature-inspired objects such as hollowed out tree trunks of varying shapes and sizes which can be used for vases or pencil holders. The expansion has continued into creating more complex sculptures that include greater components to embody the essence of nature in metal.
Living in the mid atlantic region of the United States means that the blossoms, bugs, and birds I enjoy are not around all year. Because of this, I enjoy creating nature within the permanence of steel and other metals which allows us to enjoy the momentary beauty nature offers all year long.
